I’ve heard compost is the best thing you can add to soil, but nobody ever says how much. Advice ranges from a light dusting to several inches, and I couldn’t tell which applied to my vegetable beds.
I tried the compost calculator on Gardenvoila using my bed area and an inch or two of depth. The number was bigger than my backyard bin will produce, so I’m supplementing with a few bulk bags. It was a useful reality check on how long I’d need to compost to cover everything.
How much do you work into your beds each season? And do you spread it on top or dig it in? I’ve heard no-dig works well, but I’m not sure it suits heavy clay.
